Here follows a first batch of eight samples based on some drawings from Chapter 1. Original drawings measure approximately 4 per 4 cm but have been enlarged to enable a clearer view of small marks and placed before each sample.
SAMPLE ONE (around 9 x 9 cm)
The background is dyed cotton cloth sprinkled with salt when still wet.
All free machining is whip stitch (straight stitch).
SAMPLE TWO (around 10 x 10 cm)
Background: synthetic silk brushed with acrylic ink and sprinkled with salt.
The textured heavy lines are embroidered with twin needles in a narrow zigzag stitch. Dotting is free straight stitch .
SAMPLE THREE (11 x 10 cm)
This habotai silk was backed by a support fabric. On it silk in a different green shade has been appliquéd using a dense zigzag stitch. Light blue yarn is worked in cable stitch from the back.
SAMPLE FOUR (9 x 9 cm)
Background is silk doubled with felt.
Machine embroidery: straight stitch, zigzag stitch.
SAMPLE FIVE (12 x 12 cm)
For this graphic sample I needed a stable background and I opted for a white synthetic felt.
A first single zigzagging dark blue line in straight stitch is ‘wrapped’ by secondary lines in light blue and grey (high tension in the top).
SAMPLE SIX (10 x 7 cm)
For the background painted Bondaweb was bonded on coloured ink.
Only minimal machine stitching on this sample – simple straight and zigzag lines -since the background is heavily patterned.
SAMPLE SEVEN (around 10 x 10 cm)
Synthetic velvet for the background.
‘Bubbles’ are outlined in zigzag cable stitch and filled in zigzag whip stitch.
SAMPLE EIGHT (14 x 8 cm)
Grid in zigzag stitch in different colours on two layers of gauze.
